🧮 How to Calculate a Tip (Mental Math Tricks)

Quick mental math for common percentages:

10% — Move the decimal point one place to the left. Bill of $52.00 → tip = $5.20
20% — Calculate 10% then double it. $5.20 × 2 = $10.40
15% — Calculate 10%, then add half of that. $5.20 + $2.60 = $7.80
18% — Calculate 20% then subtract 10% of the 20% result. $10.40 − $1.04 = $9.36
25% — Calculate 10% and multiply by 2.5. $5.20 × 2.5 = $13.00

Pro Tip

If the service is poor, 10–12% is acceptable. For excellent service, 20–25% shows genuine appreciation.

What is an appropriate tip for bad service?
